Area dairy farmer veteran of Ohio State Fair
(2011-08-08)
(WOUB) - The Ohio State Fair is over now and Bill Hayes is back at his farm in Guernsey County.

Participating in the fair is an annual activity for Hayes, something he's done for more than 50 years.

In one area of the fairgrounds, carnival rides and food stands dominate the scene.

But in another area, there are barns filled with horses, pigs, and cows.

It's here that I find Bill Hayes.

Hayes is clipping one of his cows.

You might say the cow has left the milking parlor for the beauty parlor..

Hayes operates Whispering Pines Farm near Cambridge.

He raises some soybeans and corn but the main commodity is milk and business is pretty good right now.

Hayes has brought eight cows to the Ohio State Fair.

He and other family members will be showing them with hopes of winning some money and taking home bragging rights.

Numerous members of the family are at the fair but Hayes says the focus is on the kids and 4-H.

Hayes refers to the Ohio State Fair as a "vacation"...although most would not use that characterization considering the considerable work that's involved.
