More mercury at Gavin
(WOUB) -
A just-released report says the amount of mercury released at the Gavin plant in Gallia County more than doubled from 2007 to 2008.

A new report from the Environmental Integrity Project says Gavin is the 12th worst mercury polluter in the United States.

The Environmental Integrity Project is an advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.

It says Gavin emitted 937 pounds of mercury in 2008, the most recent year for data, up from 435 pounds in 2007.

Still, the coal-fired plant is within mercury-emission limits set by the state.

Gavin is owned by American Electric Power...and a spokeswoman told the Columbus Dispatch the increase at Gavin was due to a switch to a different type of coal that contained more mercury.

Mercury is linked to nerve and kidney damage in children and is linked to brain damage and mental retardation in fetuses.
