BMV Clerk Pleads Guilty in Bogus ID Card Case
(2008-09-22)
(wosu) - A clerk at a Columbus office of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles is the seventh person to plead guilty to conspiring to obtain bogus identification cards for illegal immigrants in Virginia and elsewhere.

U.S. Attorney Julia Dudley said 27-year-old Michelle Eckerman of Canal Winchester pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to
one count of conspiracy. She faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine at sentencing January 12.

Eight people were indicted last spring in a conspiracy apparently intended to help illegal immigrants obtain employment
and avoid deportation.

The indictment said three defendants from Virginia sold Puerto Rican birth certificates and matching Social Security cards to illegal aliens, then arranged their travel to Columbus to obtain fake state IDs.
