Inspector General finds Excessive Overtime Payments at ODOT
Transportation violates federal labor laws by paying $2 million a year in overtime to managers and other workers who are ineligible to receive the payments.
Ohio Inspector General Tom Charles said Tuesday that the highway department's overtime payments are "excessive in comparison to virtually all other state agencies."
The report said that since 2005, the highway department has paid overtime-exempt employees about $6 million in overtime. State inspectors could find no record justifying the decision.
The investigation calls on highway officials to reevaluate their overtime policy and comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act. The department has 60 days to respond.
A message seeking comment was left with ODOT spokesman Scott Varner.
