Ohio House Approves Second 7-Day Budget
(2009-07-01)
(wosu) - The Ohio House has approved a second seven-day budget to give lawmakers more time to deal with an impasse over Gov. Ted Strickland's gambling proposal.

The House voted 84-11 Wednesday for the interim budget, which gives lawmakers an additional week to reach an agreement. The second temporary budget now heads to the Senate, which isn't scheduled to meet again until Friday.

The GOP-controlled Senate on Wednesday said it would hold hearings on Strickland's proposal to put slot machines at Ohio's seven horse racing tracks. The hearings, to begin Thursday, will seek to determine how Strickland arrived at a $933 million revenue estimate for the slots and what would happen to school funding if revenue fell short of projections.

The Senate has so far rejected the gambling plan without offering an alternative.
