"Because You're White" is a new play written by an Ohio State University Psychology major.
Jen Harris says the play began as a monologue until she was challenged by fellow student and the play's eventual director Michael Toland to expand the piece.
"Because You're White" is scheduled to be performed at New Works Lab in the Drake Student Union on Ohio State's campus beginning Friday. It will also be entered into the Denman Undergraduate Forum, a writing competition taking place in May.
Harris and Toland recently sat down with WOSU Theater Critic Joy Reilly to discuss how the play evolved and what it's about.
Harris says the play is about an interracial college-aged couple.
The dialogue examines the insecurity they face because they are different races. The play also looks at the reaction of others towards the couple.
Michael Toland and Jen Harris are undergraduate students at Ohio State.
"Because You're White" a play written by Harris and directed by Toland plays this weekend at The New Works Lab in the Drake Performance and Event Center.
WOSU Theater Critic Joy Reilly can be heard Wednesdays at 12:35pm during NPR's "Day To Day" on WOSU 820.
