Joyce: It's advertised as a multi-sensory thrill ride and certainly delivers on its promise.
Rico: We've seen it many times on stage, television and the movies. A whole new breath of life infuses this telling.
Joyce: Jim Carrey plays Scrooge to the hilt, only sometimes revealing his usual wackiness. It also features Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn, and Carey Elwes, all done quite nicely. Sometimes the actors played more than one role.
Rico: Many of the images appear to be drawn by Noman Rockwell. The 3-D depth is consistently breathtaking. I'm sure, you all know the story.
That leaves only room for visual interpretation. Motion capture is the key word (or two). I believe they got it right!
Joyce: I'm afraid I'm much less enthusiastic about this treatment of such a beloved classic. In my estimation all the "cartoonizing" of the action was really overdone. I guess to me it seemed almost out of place with the ideas being expressed in this very serious story. The classic story is all there but seemed sometimes overwhelmed by the special effects. Sorry, but I'm kind of Bah, Humbug.
Rico: But I think you'll love it, although when you stop and think, it is a pretty dark story. The visuals blew me away so much I really enjoyed it as did more in the preview audience.
Joyce: Also I should mention, the ghost sequences are very scary and not appropriate for very young children. The visuals were spectacular but overall, I'm sorry to say, I was somewhat disappointed.
