Immigration detains suspected driver of crashed van
(2005-06-22)
(St. Louis Public Radio) - Immigration officials have detained a man from Guatemala who they think was driving the van that crashed near Columbia this weekend, causing five deaths.

In all, 20 people were crammed into the van; four men and a woman died when it overturned on I-70.

The passengers were migrant workers, mostly from Central America, who were traveling from Los Angeles to the East Coast.

The suspected driver is identified as Gelson Mancilla Santiago. Immigration officials says he's been deported twice in the past and that his case has been referred to federal prosecutors.

Also in custody are two passengers who are suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.

There are still four people who were injured in the crash who are still in the hospital. © Copyright 2012, St. Louis Public Radio
