During his weekly "Just Jazz Presents..." segment (midnight-1:00 am), Bob Bernotas will feature the music of February Just Jazz Artist of the Month Sonny Stitt.
A major figure in the bebop movement of the mid 1940s, Sonny Stitt (1924-1982) made his earliest recordings on alto saxophone, many of them with modern jazz pioneers like trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and drummer Kenny Clarke. He added the tenor saxophone to his arsenal in the late 1940s, and over the next two decades recorded a series of friendly but fierce "tenor battles" with his longtime colleague, Gene Ammons. A bold and confident improvisor, Stitt was known for his "take no prisoners" approach at jam sessions and public performances, and remained a distinctive influence and prolific recording artist until his death.
