Kate McGarrigle at the 2008 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala source)Canadian folk singer and songwriter Kate McGarrigle has died of cancer at the age of 63 at her home in Montreal. She was best known as part of the McGarrigle Sisters, singing with her sister Anna.
The McGarrigle Sisters began their careers playing Montreal coffee houses in the 1960's with the group, Mountain City Four. In 1974 Linda Ronstadt recorded Heart Like A Wheel by Kate and Anna McGarrigle as the track of the album. Their first record, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, was recorded in 1975 leading to more covers by well known artists like Judy Collins and Emmylou Harris.
Kate was once married to singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright III and was the mother of Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright.
