As we parked across the block from Brooklyn Bowl the visual impression was one of a warehouse being guarded outside by a bunch of thugs. Could be I've just been playing Mafia Wars a bit too much lately. Upon entry it was readily apparent that this place is unique; a venue that evokes memories of The Wetlands combined with a great restaurant and a state of the art bowling alley. You heard me, Lebowski, lanes to roll on in the venue! While Gov't Mule's new CD played in the background the band members worked their way through the room, greeting people and chatting with them while people ate, drank, and rolled, rolled, rolled.

When the CD ended one of the owners introduced the band, and they tore into the first song on the new recording, "Brokedown on the Brazos." After a few more new songs they dove into some Mule classics, starting with "Beautifully Broken." Brooklyn Bowl's audience rocked out hard to Mule's magnificent version of Alice Cooper's "Is It My Body."
Just before the encore Warren Haynes' wife Stephanie Scamardo brought out two birthday cakes with the candles burning and everybody joined in singing "Happy Birthday" to Matt Abts(drums) & Jorgen Carlsson(bass).
Although their new CD is titled, "By A Thread," Gov't Mule proves that they have earned a place in the rock and roll hierarchy with the strength of their new album and their powerful live performances. Solid as a rock and steady as a Mule, Warren, Matt, Danny and Jorgen have concocted one kickin' new CD!
Brooklyn Bowl gets two thumbs up.
