The Impossible Dream - The Story of Scott Walker and the Walker Brothers 1960's musical trivia question. Which American band, at the height of Beatlemania, had a larger fan club in England than either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones? The answer is The Walker Brothers. Their biggest hit records included 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'My Ship Is Coming In' and 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.' Not actually brothers, but three talented Americans, who "went to jolly old England, seeking their fame and fortune and lookin for a pot of gold," as John Fogerty once said.
How did Scott (Engel), John (Maus), and Gary (Leeds) achieve this incredible success? Author Anthony Reynolds traces their rise from relative obscurity to the toppermost of the poppermost in 1966 and 1967. This is the first in depth biography of The Walker Brothers, as told by the Brothers themselves, along with the musicians, producers, and fans who worked with and closely followed every move of The Walker Brothers.
Remember the old adage be careful what you wish for? Well, when The Walker Brothers found fame, they were confronted with dangerous, rabid female fans along with grueling package tours. At the peak of their popularity, a Walker Brothers show was completely drowned out by the screaming, hysterical young ladies. The pressure of this fame eventually led to their demise. Scott Walker, in particular, being somewhat shy and reclusive, was most affected by their time in the spotlight. All three Walker Brothers went on to record solo projects, but it is the work of Scott that is best remembered.
The Walker Brothers reformed in 1976 and released a great single called 'No Regrets'. In 1978, their swansong was 'Nite Flights' of which Brian Eno stated "We haven't got any further than this. It's a disgrace."
The Walker Brothers truly did achieve 'The Impossible Dream'. By building on the great pop creations of Phil Spector and the 'Wall of Sound', the Brothers created some of the most breathtaking records of the 20th Century. One listen to 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' (originally recorded by Frankie Valli) and you will understand the beauty and magic of Scott and John's unique vocal blend combined with exquisite orchestrations.
