Host of WNTI's Just Jazz - November 5, 2008
Dena DeRose: Live at Jazz Standard, Volume 2 (MaxJazz)
Bob Bernotas, WNTI's host of Just Jazz, makes the following four CD recommendations:
Dena DeRose: Live at Jazz Standard, Volume 2 (MaxJazz): Dena's Volume 1 was one of the best jazz releases of 2007 - Volume 2 is just as excellent. It's simply wonderful to hear this gifted singer-pianist and her long-time collaborators, bassist Martin Wind and drummer Matt Wilson, performing creative, extended treatments of great tunes before a live audience.
Arturo O'Farrill & Claudia Acuna: In These Shoes (Zoho): Pianist-arranger Arturo O'Farrill and singer Claudio Acu?a join talents to create an engaging mélange of contemporary Latin jazz, folkloric Afro-Cuban roots, sophisticated funk, sexy, tongue-in-cheek fun (in the title tune), and a Venezuelan joropo-meets-John Coltrane version of Van Morrison's "Moondance."
Sonny Rollins: Road Shows, Volume 1 (Doxy): What could be more welcome than seven previously unreleased live performances - recorded between 1986 and 2007 - by one of the all-time giants of jazz? Sonny Rollins proves once again, as if any more proof were needed, that he is still the saxophone colossus.
Steve Wiest: Out of the New (Arabesque Jazz): Jazz versions of tunes by Aerosmith, Sting, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, and even Mr. Rogers? Trombonist Steve Wiest has appropriated and recomposed this unlikely material, arranged it for his accomplished quintet, and delivered one of the year's most original and innovative releases.
