Just Jazz Celebrates the 110th Birthday of Duke Ellington

On two consecutive editions of Just Jazz - host Bob Bernotas will be celebrating the 110th birthday of jazz immortal Duke Ellington with special two-part interview with former Duke Ellington trombonist John Sanders.

From February 1954 to September 1959, when he left the band to pursue his vocation in the Catholic priesthood, John Sanders was an essential contributor to the Ellington sound. During this interview - conducted in June 2008 by Bob Bernotas and the former host of WNTI's Bluesology program, Jack Devaney - Sanders discusses his early musical background, reminisces about his colleagues in this one-of-a-kind jazz orchestra, and reflects on his unique experiences and relationship with the master himself. He also listens to and comments on some classic Ellington recordings.

And following Part 2 of the interview, Bob's popular Just Jazz Presents… segment will feature a full hour of the songs of Duke Ellington, as sung by the great voices of jazz.
