New Jersey Nets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe will serve as the team's coach for the rest of the season. The Nets made the official announcement Tuesday morning. The Nets fired Lawrence Frank, their coach for 6 1/2 seasons, on Sunday morning. Former NBA head coach Del Harris will join the Nets as Vandeweghe's assistant. The pair previously worked together in Dallas. The Nets set an NBA record this week with 18 straight losses to begin a season.
World number one Serena Williams has been fined $175,000 and put on probation for two years for her foul-mouthed tirade at the U.S. Open, the Grand Slam Committee said on Monday. The committee said a further major offence at a grand slam in the next two years would see her suspended from the U.S. Open in 2010, 2011 or 2012. The fine will be reduced to $82,500 if she commits no further major offence through 2011.
Now that the two year World Tour is over, Springsteen is taking some time to prepare a release of a deluxe box-set edition of his 1978 classic, Darkness on the Edge of Town. "The Darkness box set is 93 percent done," Springsteen told Rolling Stone. "It's absolutely fantastic and there are just some finishing touches that we need to turn our attention to and finalize and we'll get it out there . . . We're working on some different approaches to a DVD for this tour. The box set will reportedly include a re-mastered version of Darkness, plus a documentary on the making of the album and previously unreleased live footage. The collection is expected in early 2010.
Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora was honored by his hometown of Woodbridge, New Jersey, this week. "He's our most famous alumnus," Woodbridge Mayor Jon McCormac said, standing outside Woodbridge High School, where a street was dedicated as Richie Sambora Way. Sambora was honored for his fundraising effort, You Can Go Home, which was started to aid Kelly Mahon, a local teen who was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago.

The surviving members of the Clash have revealed the release details for the 30th anniversary edition of their classic album, London Calling. The London Calling: 30th Anniversary Legacy Edition package will include the original release, plus a DVD featuring Don Letts' documentary on the making of the album, The Last Testament, as well as music videos for the songs "London Calling," "Clampdown" and "Train In Vain." The DVD will hit stores on December 14.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - A 38-year-old former Miss Argentina has died from complications after undergoing cosmetic surgery on her buttocks. Solange Magnano, a mother of twins who won the crown in 1994, died of a pulmonary embolism Sunday after three days in critical condition following a gluteoplasty in Buenos Aires. Close friend Roberto Piazza said the procedure involved injections and the liquid "went to her lungs and brain."
Former Black Sabbath member and current Heaven and Hell singer Ronnie James Dio has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. Dio's wife, Wendy, reported on her husband's official website that the legendary singer has already begun treatment. "Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer," she said. "We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back onstage, where he belongs . . ."
Kings of Leon are among rock's front-runners for awards at the 2010 Grammys, garnering nominations in four categories. The Nashville quartet's smash-hit, "Use Somebody," was nominated for record of the year, song of the year, best rock performance by a duo or group and best rock song. 62 year old Meredith Baxter, the actress best known for playing hippie mom Elyse Keaton on the 1980s sitcom "Family Ties," announced that she's a lesbian and has been keeping her sexual preference a secret for seven years. "I am a lesbian and it was a later-in-life recognition," Baxter said on NBC's "Today" show. "Some people would say, well, you're living a lie and, you know, the truth is -- not at all. This has only been for the past seven years." She is thrice divorced.
The year-old New York City annex to Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will shut down Jan. 3. A news release issued Thursday, gave no reason for the closing. Backers had hoped to attract up to a half-million visitors annually but have not said what attendance was. The collection displayed at the annex includes Bruce Springsteen's 1957 Chevy. The rock hall says some of the artifacts could become part of a traveling show.
