Tax assessment tossed out
(2008-09-25)
(wnmu) - A state appeals court has tossed out a tax assessment on land near Crandon once slated for a mine. Mining Corporations tried for years to get permits for the area. The Forest County Potawatomi and the Sokaogon Chippewa community finally bought the land in 2003 and placed mining restrictions on it. The tribes contend the town of Lincoln charged them excessive property taxes on the land in 2005 and 2006. The town contends its assessments were properly based on the 2003 sale value. But the 3rd district Court of Appeals says the sale included too many other components and is not a good measure of the land's value. The towns attorney didn't immediately return a message. © Copyright 2009, wnmu
