USDA awards telemedicine/distance learning grants
(2008-09-23)
(wnmu) - Two Upper Peninsula entities have been awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Program.

Bell Hospital in Ishpeming has received a $200,000 telemedicine grant. The money will be used to purchase technology that will allow mammogram images to be transmitted to off-site radiologists. The project will also give the hospital baseline technology for future implementation of an electronic medical record initiative.

Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College has been given a $250,473 grant for a distance learning project. Three digital video conference centers will be established to join the reservation's two districts. The initiative is meant to help students get their high school diplomas or GEDs, increase vocational and post-secondary education, and provide professional development for staff.
