Governor Jennifer Granholm has declared September, "Infant Safe Sleep" month in Michigan. Officials are trying to prevent infant deaths by advising parents to learn more about protecting infants when they sleep. An interagency team joining Tomorrow's Child, the Michigan Public Health Institute, and other state departments of human services have collected resources on how to prevent infant deaths. Posters, brochures, and public announcements have been made to help with the effort. Safe sleep guidelines for infants include; making sure babies sleep alone, in a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress and tightly fitted sheet, babies should sleep on their backs, no soft objects, blankets or bumper pads should be placed in the crib, babies should be kept warm using sleep clothing not blankets, and babies must sleep in smoke-free environments.
