Chassell residents have one week to remove barriers
(2008-09-15)
(wnmu) - Residents who live along the railroad grade between Chassell and Houghton have a week to remove any barriers they may have placed in the thoroughfare. Last week, Houghton County Circuit Court Judge Garfield Hood ruled the stretch which the Department of Natural Resources designated as a snowmobile trail must be cleared within 14 days. DNR spokeswoman Mary Detloff says the public deserves to have a trail that's free of obstructions.

The barriers were erected in 2005 when residents claimed the grade was part of their property. Detloff says if the barriers are not removed in the time given, the landowners could be held in contempt of court or even face jail time.
