The Marquette Area Public Schools District is now allowed to offer online courses to some high school students. Superintendent Jon Hartwig says the Michigan Department of Education has granted MAPS a waiver to let up to 61 area students participate in its new Virtual High School program. He says high-school aged kids will be able to enroll in and receive credit for work performed outside conventional classrooms. Hartwig says the district is moving into the future by using current technology to teach kids in a way they understand and use often. Hartwig says the program is available to youth who are not currently enrolled in MAPS-sponsored programs, like homeschooled students and those in contiguous school districts. He notes the courses will offer live teachers at the end of the computer cable, and a mentor will be provided within the district.
