Governor's Task Force holds conference
(2008-09-05)
(wnmu) - Governor Jennifer Granholm's Interagency Task Force on Employee Misclassification has held a public hearing to address workers who are misclassified. The task force was created to direct enforcement across state departments. Heading up the conference was task force chair Keith Cooley who is the Director of the Department of Economic Labor and Growth. Along with him were 5 other task force members. Some issues addressed by the task force included; educating the public about employee misclassification, developing ways and systems by which to identify misclassification, and establishing a referral system for the public. After the task force finished addressing the public they allowed the public to address them with open comments. An employee is considered misclassified when employers label them as "independent contractors" instead of "employees." By doing this, it allows employers to avoid legal responsibilities. © Copyright 2009, wnmu
