Delta County Airport officials say Mesaba Airlines will continue essential air service there. Airport Manager Connie Ness says Mesaba--a carrier of Northwest Airlines--had a contract to serve Escanaba and Iron Mountain, but decided to re-negotiate the contract, which ended in June. Ness says higher fuel costs were to blame for the move. She says Mesaba wanted better compensation from the Department of Transportation.Ness says the DOT sent out a request for bids from other airlines, and both Mesaba and Great Lakes Airlines put in offers. She says the DOT awarded the contract to Mesaba on Friday.
