MARQUETTE, MI
(wnmu) -
Tourism at U.P. parks and beaches is down this summer, and Marquette is no exception. City Parks and Recreation Director Hugh Leslie says preliminary numbers indicate 3,000 fewer people have visited beaches this summer, while attendance at area campgrounds is down 25 to 30 percent or more. Leslie blames the drop on excessive gas prices, which keep prospective downstate visitors from crossing the Mackinac Bridge. Leslie notes while downstate residents aren't crossing the bridge as much, more Wisconsin residents are coming to Michigan for a visit. Leslie says city officials are increasing advertising for Tourist Park in camping catalogs and the internet. He adds they're looking to change marina operations, such as renovating the marina at Presque Isle Park, and eventually building a transient marina at Founder's Landing.
