Scammers target federal rebate checks
(2008-05-08)
(wnmu) - Con artists are using federal tax rebate payments to pull the newest scam. Congressman Bart Stupak says scammers are calling residents and claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service, in an effort to get personal information. Callers say they need the information in order to process the payment.

Stupak says scammers are also using the internet. Victims will receive an e-mail asking them to click a link and fill out a form, supposedly for direct deposit of the payment in their bank account. Stupak says the IRS uses tax forms to send out payments, and needs no additional information from residents.
