PRNL implements VHS measures
(2008-04-04)
(wnmu) - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is taking steps to prevent the spread of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia. VHS is a disease that causes fish to bleed internally, and has been found in all of the lower Great Lakes. Pictured Rocks Superintendent Jim Northup says four National Park Service units and the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa are following a plan to stop VHS from entering Lake Superior. He says its primary aim is to make people aware of the virus and how it spreads.

In the meantime, Northup has implemented a series of emergency measures at Pictured Rocks. They prohibit the exchange of ballast water within park boundaries, mandate the decontamination of boats before they're launched, and restrict the use of certain baits that spread VHS.
