Coaster Brook Trout may be named "endangered"
(2008-03-21)
(wnmu) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is one step closer to putting the Coaster Brook Trout on the Endangered Species List. Marvin Roberson is a forest ecologist with the Michigan Sierra Club. He says there are only about 200 of the fish left on the southern shore of Lake Superior, and they're found in the Salmon Trout River on the Yellow Dog Plains.

The Sierra Club and Huron Mountain Club petitioned the Fish and Wildlife Service for a decision. Roberson says an endangered designation won't impact permits for a proposed sulfide mine under the river, but it would prohibit any activity that might kill the fish, should the project go forward.

The Fish and Wildlife Service says it will make a final determination regarding the trout by December 15.
