Great Lakes ice breaking begins
(2008-03-12)
(wnmu) - The U.S. Coast Guard will start ice breaking activities on the Great Lakes this week. Beginning Friday, the Coast Guard cutter Alder will join forces with the cutter Biscayne Bay based out of St. Ignace. The ships will commence operations in the waters of St. Louis Bay out to Lake Superior, breaking ice in areas normally used by recreationists. Beginning next week the cutters will move up along the Minnesota coastline, breaking out other U.S. commercial shipping ports.

Anglers should remove all ice shanties, and officials say ATV operators should avoid shipping channels and use caution near the ice.
