The Executive Director of the Small Business Foundation of Michigan is impressed with small businesses in the Copper Country. Mark Clevy gave a presentation in Houghton last month. He says when the mining industry fell, the area decided to grow business from within the community, instead of replacing it with another big industry. Clevy says residents relied on the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance--not state or federal government--to create a new strategy.Clevy says the Copper Country is doing an excellent job of educating people to launch their own business in the area, instead of leaving to join another, larger company.
