WASHINGTON, D.C.
(wnmu) -
Lawmakers from Michigan and Wisconsin are discussing the future of NewPage paper mills in Niagara and Kimberly, Wisconsin. Congressmen Bart Stupak, Steve Kagen, and Tom Petri met with NewPage CEO Mark Suwyn in Washington, D.C. on Monday to talk about what will happen to the mills, whose closure will affect 444 employees. Officials discussed federal and state assistance for displaced workers, as well as the possibility of selling or reusing the Niagara mill for non-coated paper production. Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, who also attended the meeting, said she'd continue to work with NewPage to grow new jobs through accelerating wood-based alternative energy technologies. © Copyright 2013, wnmu
