Mine opponents cheer DNR delay
(2008-01-11)
(wnmu) - Environmental groups are cheering the Department of Natural Resources for delaying a decision on permits for a proposed Marquette County nickel and copper mine. DNR Director Rebecca Humphries was slated to release the decision Thursday, but instead asked Kennecott Minerals Company for more information. Michelle Halley is an attorney for the National Wildlife Federation. She says Humphries made the right move in delaying the decision. Halley says she thinks officials saw through Kennecott's "smoke and mirrors" answers about the project.

Kennecott spokesperson Deb Muchmore says her company realizes it's an important process, and will supply as much information as the DNR needs. She says Kennecott is looking forward to additional dialogue with the department.

DNR officials caution the delay doesn't mean the mine project's in jeopardy. They say they don't know when a decision will be made.
