MARQUETTE, MI
(wnmu) -
Ten people have been sentenced in Federal Court in connection with the trafficking of crack cocaine and stolen firearms in the Menominee area. The sentences come as the result of a 2006 investigation by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, which uncovered shipments of crack and powder cocaine from Chicago. At the same time, police began investigating the break-in of the Walter Brothers True Value store in Menominee, during which someone took 19 handguns. The guns were eventually found to be in the possession of the drug ring suspects. The shortest sentence handed down Friday was 46 months in prison, while the longest was 20 years. Sentenced were Joseph Smith, James and Deborah Green, Mark Keller, Brandon Smejkal, and Shawn Klatt--all of Menominee, Robert Turnbo of Highland, Indiana, Vicki Walton of Marinette, Wisconsin, Rex Furlough of Dalton, Illinois, and Jason Beard of Phoenix, Illinois.
