Professors send letter opposing sulfide mine
(2007-12-18)
(wnmu) - Another group is voicing its disapproval of a proposed nickel and copper mine in Marquette County. Professors representing 12 universities across the state have sent the Department of Natural Resources a letter opposing the project. John Vucetich is an assistant professor at Michigan Technological University and letter co-signer. He says some decisions--especially those regarding environmental resources--shouldn't be based only on cost and benefits, but upon moral and ethical principles, as well.

Vucetich says the health of the economy cannot be based on mining nickel. He says the federal government reports if the U.S. were to share nickel more equitably with the rest of the world, nickel resources would be depleted in about 60 years.

More than 40 professors around Michigan have signed the letter.
