MSHS doesn't meet Adequate Yearly Progress
(2007-12-05)
(wnmu) - Federal No Child Left Behind requirements need to be revamped. That's according to Jon Hartwig, Superintendent of Marquette Area Public Schools. According to report cards released this week, Marquette Senior High School failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress, or the degree to which a school hits targets set by federal standards. Hartwig attributes the failure to one of the schools subgroups--students with disabilities--which didn't achieve one of its goals.

Hartwig notes the same happened to 488 other high schools across the state--up from 399 the year before. He says there's concern across Michigan that No Child Left Behind is placing all schools in danger of eventually not meeting AYP. Hartwig says targets will continue to rise until 2014, when all kids are expected to be proficient. He believes the education process needs to be recalibrated so all schools can achieve their goals.
