Sawyer airport passenger numbers up

Sawyer International Airport had its best third quarter ever this year for passenger traffic. Nearly 41,000 people flew out of Sawyer from July through September, about 10.35 percent more than the same time last year. Airport manager Keith Kaspari says Sawyer has been in its current location since 1999, and has been able to establish itself as a primary airport in the U.P. Kaspari says the holiday travel season will likely keep the passenger trend going. He notes American Eagle and Mesaba airlines have been able to pick up the slack after Midwest Airlines pulled out of Sawyer this year.
