Marquette Crime Lab may close
Stephens says closure of the labs would slow down the process of evidence analysis. He notes a definite closure date has not been set. And although there is some movement in the legislature to keep the labs open, Stephens says no plan is in place.

Officials at the Michigan State Police Crime Lab in Marquette are hoping for an influx of funding, so the facility can remain open. Both the Marquette and downstate Sterling Heights labs are slated to close, because of a $2 million deficit in the State Police budget. David Stephens is the director of the Marquette Lab. He says the facility is a critical element in U.P. law enforcement, it processes evidence from every police agency in all 15 counties.Stephens says closure of the labs would slow down the process of evidence analysis. He notes a definite closure date has not been set. And although there is some movement in the legislature to keep the labs open, Stephens says no plan is in place.
