DNR to host meetings for Tribal Treaty

(wnmu) - The Department of Natural Resources will be hosting public meetings to discuss the Tribal Treaty of 1836. Nine meetings will be held in October and November to discuss the recent agreement of hunting, fishing and gathering rights with five Michigan Indian Tribes. The areas impacted by the treaty include the eastern half of the Upper Peninsula and the northwest one-third of the Lower Peninsula. At the meetings,DNR staff will discuss the agreement and it's impact on natural resources in the treaty area. They will also draw attention to what methods and harvest limits for hunting and fishing are contained in the treaty. The meetings scheduled for the U.P. are in Escanaba on tuesday, October 16h and Sault St.Marie, wednesday October 17th.
