MARQUETTE, MI
(wnmu) -
Student enrollment at Northern Michigan University is down slightly this fall, after nine straight years of growth. NMU's 10th Day Enrollment Report indicates the number of sophomores decreased this year. That brings the total headcount down by 2.6 percent from 2006, to 9,111. However, the report shows an increase in the number of first-time, full-time freshmen and in the academic credentials of new freshmen enrolled in baccalaureate programs. Associate vice-president for institutional research Paul Duby says officials will study why those sophomores didn't return to campus. He says it's a retention--not an enrollment--issue. Duby says the most popular undergraduate programs among incoming students are nursing, art and design, criminal justice, and elementary education. The report also shows 54 percent of all northern students are female, and 7.4 percent represent ethnic minorities.
