A record number of people participated in this year's Mackinac Bridge Walk. The Michigan Department of Transportation says 57,000 walkers, joggers, and runners crossed the five-mile span on Labor Day, prompting Mackinac Bridge Authority officials to extend the usual 11 a.m. deadline into the afternoon. Motorists were also able to cross, as two-way traffic was maintained in the southbound lanes.This year marks the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Mackinac Bridge.
