A management plan for a Marquette County river may impact plans for a sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains. The Salmon Trout River Watershed Management Plan looks at existing and potential threats to water quality, and recommends ways of protecting and improving the river. Carl Lindquist is executive director of the Superior Watershed Partnership. He says the plan bans sulfide mining on the watershed, and it's been approved by the Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency. The DEQ restored tentative approval last month for permits related to a nickel and copper mine proposal by Kennecott Minerals. Lindquist says he hopes the DEQ's approval of the river management plan will be given consideration as the mine process moves forward.
