Fire evacuations ordered in Luce County
(2007-08-07)
(wnmu) - The Sleeper Lakes Fire about six miles north of Newberry has grown to more than 19,000 acres, and residents along a seven-mile stretch have been ordered to evacuate. Firefighters rushed to create a fire line along County Road 407 Tuesday, as the westward wildfire burned to within a half-mile of the road. About 200 people from Halfway Lake to Pine Stump Junction were told to leave Tuesday morning, as well as campers in four nearby state forests. Officials continue to monitor wind directions, which have been erratic and have fanned the flames in extremely dry conditions.

M-123 was reopened Tuesday. But officials are warning motorists to stay away from the area, to let fire trucks and construction equipment get through on local roads.
