The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will receive funding to implement a new policing strategy. The $175,000 comes from the U.S. Department of Justice Community Capacity Development Office. It will be used to combat gang- and drug-related activities, as part of the 2007 "Weed and Seed Communities" competitive grant program. The Baraga tribe was approved as a Weed and Seed Community effective October 1 of this year. Law enforcement will focus on reducing the impact of gang- and drug-related crime through increased neighborhood involvement, coordinated intervention and treatment efforts, and a community restoration strategy. The initiative aims to "weed out" violent criminals and "seed" much-needed human services.
