The risk of children being neglected has increased over the past year. According to a detailed report released by Kids Count in Michigan' shows a 36-percent increase in the statewide child poverty rate. Jane Zehnder-Merrel is the senior research associate at the Michigan League for Human Services. She says poverty is caused by the economic well-being of the state, and can lead to not only child abuse, but neglect.Zehnder-Merrel says the infant mortality rate is also alarmingly high, which most likely attributes to a difficulty for pregnant women to access proper healthcare.
