Escanaba considers power options
(2007-07-23)
(wnmu) - The city of Escanaba continues to look for new power supply sources. Gilbert Cheeves is the president of Construction Consultants of Michigan in Escanaba. He says the city uses about 25 megawatts of power now, and will need 40 to 50 megawatts in the future. The city partnered with Wisconsin Public Power to conduct a study on the cost and criteria for building a new power plant. Cheeves says officials discovered that building a new plant isn't economically feasible at this time. He says purchasing power at the wholesale market rate is more likely to occur. Cheeves says options for the city now include purchasing power from other sources, upgrading the current plant, and possibly modifying the plant to burn biomass.
