DNR releases plan to combat Emerald Ash Borer
(2007-05-31)
(wnmu) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has developed an Emerald Ash Borer Community Preparedness Plan. The insect has destroyed 20 million Ash trees in lower michigan so far, and the EAB plan is hoping to decrease the borer's impact. Kerry Gray is the Emerald Ash Borer Restoration Coordinator with Michigan's DNR. Gray says it is important for communities to have a plan against the insect even if their area hasn't been affected yet. Communities need to be able to decide whether they will cut affected trees or chemically treat them, Gray says.
Gray is encouraging michigan residents to also remember to plant diversely when landscaping this summer to reduce the impact the ash borer may have on their community. A copy of the plan can be downloaded at www.michigan.gov/dnrucf.
