CALUMET, MI
(wnmu) -
State officials still plan to close the Michigan State Police post in Calumet, despite the fact that trooper layoffs have been averted. It costs the state $11,900 a month to lease the building, and the closure of a downstate post at the same time would save Michigan $230,000 a year. Trooper Gary Lassila says he hopes additional funds will come through, so public safety in the Keweenaw won't be compromised. Six troopers currently work at the Calumet post. If it closes, they would most likely be transferred to other posts in the U.P.
