Residents trying to save Merwin Creek campground
(2007-04-13)
(wnmu) - Some Schoolcraft County residents are trying to save a popular campground on the Manistique River that State officials are planning to close. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources last month announced the Merwin Creek State Forest campground would be dismantled to save money. The campground has been operated by the Central Upper Peninsula Community Corrections Program. But program officials decided this year to get out of the campground management business, and the DNR says it can't afford to keep the site open.

Thursday, the Manistique Township Board discussed leasing the campground from the State. The local Eagles Club has offered to act as caretaker. The board has delayed action on the issue until the county attorney can review the proposed lease.
