Michigan universities are struggling to balance costs with affordable tuition, and NMU is no exception. A recent report says tuition in the state rose 37 percent over four years, ending with the 2005-2006 school year. Gavin Leach is Northern's Associate Vice-President for Finance and Planning. He says NMU tuition rose 28 percent during that time. Leach blames the increased costs of state mandates, pensions, and things like heat and power for the sharp rise in tuition.Leach says Northern finds itself in a situation where half-year revenue is going down, while enrollment increased 8.4 percent in four years. He says that puts a lot of pressure on tuition and fees.
