Recent winter storms have been keeping people indoors, which heightens the risk of home accidents. The City of Marquette Fire Department is urging residents to observe safe fire practices. Officials say care should be taken with cooking and heating appliances and candles, and smoke detectors should be checked regularly. Officials say shoveling snow can also be dangerous. Residents who are clearing snow should stop and rest often, and never overdo it. Also, those with a fire hydrant on their property are being asked to keep it free of snow in case it needs to be used.
