MARINETTE, WI
(wnmu) -
Two area lawmakers are urging swift resolution of problems with a Navy ship construction project, which could affect a local shipbuilder. Congressmen Bart Stupak of Menominee and Steve Kagen of Sisconsin say the Littoral Combat Ship Program is designed to provide the Navy with fast, flexible warships that can operate in coastal waters. But in January, a stop work order was issued at the Bollinger Shipyard in Louisiana. Navy officials are questioning why the project has cost almost double initial estimates. The contract for the initial series of ships is split between two contractors: Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics, and the first lockheed ship is being finished at Marinette Marine. Stupak and Kagen say the LCS program is important not only to the Navy's future, but to the Marinette-Menominee area. They say problems need to be addressed quickly so the project can be put back on track. © Copyright 2013, wnmu
