Negaunee seeks wastewater deal
(2007-03-01)
(wnmu) - Negaunee officials are trying to strike a deal with the township and a tribe on wastewater treatment. The City Council recently sent a letter to the two parties, urging them to sign an agreement soon. The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community wants to construct a casino at the old county airport, and will need wastewater treatment services. Negaunee City Manager Gerald Peterson says the project has been in limbo while the KBIC waits for approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In the meantime, Peterson says Negaunee is conducting a feasibility study to determine what needs to be done to modernize its water treatment plant. He says the city hasn't ruled out contracting with Ishpeming's plant to accommodate increased usage.
